The Software Developer Java Backend Server will work within a government/contractor team to develop and deploy robust backend technology to power today's modern web architectures.  The Software Developer will build responsive, interactive, data-driven experiences relying on powerful backend server capabilities that operate in secure, scalable, and highly-reliable configurations that support the Intelligence Community (IC) and Department of Defense (DoD).  Developers must have experience in a number of specific areas such as Amazon and Azure cloud services, Java EE, RESTful web services, and new and upcoming middleware and server-side technologies.

The Software Developer Java Backend Server will work at NGA facilities in Springfield, VA or St. Louis, MO, with occasional travel to ESRI facilities in Vienna, VA or St. Charles, MO.

This position is contingent upon client approval, and successful cross-over of existing TS/SCI clearance.

  • Build server-side Java components that power UX and client experiences of many types, including ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Architect solutions working as an expert Java programmer, writing scalable, reusable, and maintainable code
  • Design and build REST interfaces for administration of ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Design and build server-side components that seamlessly run on-premises and on cloud platforms
  • Work collaboratively with other teams across the engineering group to understand requirements and incorporate them into the software
  • Apply good software design and development practices in daily activities
  • Write comprehensive technical design specifications and support documentation

 Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • A solid foundation in computer science, with strong competencies in data structures and software design
  • Programming experience in Java platform and Java design patterns
  • Knowledge of relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or DB2
  • Experience developing code in popular Java IDE, i.e. Eclipse/IntelliJ IDEA
  • Good understanding of cloud computing platforms and services such as Amazon S3, SQS, EC2, and Azure services such as Blob Service, Table Service, etc.
  • Fundamental understanding of web services including SOAP and REST
  • Knowledge of working with a source control system, preferably GIT
  • Experience with using Agile software development methodologies (Scrum)


  • Experience developing and deploying software in the IC or DoD
  • Knowledge of the Java build systems Maven and ANT
  • Experience with HTTP monitoring tools and JDK debugging tools
  • Familiarity with JSON and XML
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS or other web mapping technologies
  • CompTIA Security+ Certification
  • Experience with NGA databases, systems, imagery, and digital mapping data, products, and services


Experience and Education:


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, GIS, GEOINT, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience developing middleware software components using core Java, Servlets, JSP, EJBs


  • Master's degree in a related field

 License and/or Certifications:

  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance with SCI Eligibility (TS/SCI)

  • Does not directly supervise employees; may be on team(s) providing guidance & instruction to others
